Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
“Seven last words of Christ”, Op.51

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975)
String Quartet Nr.15, Op.144

Haydn’s Quartet Seven Last Words of Christ is a set of meditations on the seven expressions biblically attributed to Jesus during his crucifixion. The last string quartet No.15 written by Shostakovich – arguably the most intimate work of the composer – is interwoven with Haydn’s composition in this project and is creating a bridge between centuries, connected by the reflection on the same subject – death.

Gidon Kremer says: “In this particular project, I am trying to make everyone feel the timelessness of great pieces of art, reminding all of us that life is short and we should not to waste a minute of it.”

Both works in original versions (arranged by Gidon Kremer in cooperation with composer Victor Kissine for KREMERATA BALTICA) will be performed in the original order, but within each other.

Texts by 7 contemporary authors: Primo Levi, Stephen Hawking, Rose Ausländer, Jorge Luis Borges, Harold Pinter, Steve Jobs are going to be shown as projections.
